KIDS IN THE KITCHEN – Cooking Special Breakfast for Mom and Dad

Over the years breakfast has evolved into a special time for our family. The tradition really got started by our parents who always made it a point when we were all together, especially now that we live in different states, to wake up early and fix a breakfast feast. BigFam Papa’s specialty happened to be bacon, BigFam Gramma always made the perfect scrambled eggs and BigFam Mamala always had something special up her sleeve as she experimented with different baked goods or recipes she had come across while watching her favorites on the Food Network.

It didn’t take long before the kids started requesting to help out in the kitchen and be part of the breakfast magic. It was this servant spirit that their grandparents modeled to them that sparked their early love for cooking and being in the kitchen. Before they ever learned any cooking techniques or recipes, they learned the most important ingredient of all: Love. What really makes special breakfast special is that everything is made with the secret ingredient of love.

Breakfast is a great meal to use to introduce basic cooking skills that kids can then apply to more complicated recipes and techniques. It also gives the kids a chance to work with all of the food groups. Clean up is also pretty reasonable and working with things like eggs and breakfast meats are a good introduction to food safety and hand washing.

In the kitchen there are plenty of jobs to do. Each kid can find their cooking niche and they can learn how to cook their own favorite breakfast dishes. Inviting your kids into the kitchen is something you will not regret if you can let go of some of the control. Empower them to try and possibly fail and then to try again the next time. You may find that your kids will be begging to make special breakfast for you just so that they can get better at their cooking skills.
